Carlson, Dec 30, 2018 Rating Not Rated Version 16 of Family Tree Maker is the number one best-selling genealogy program of all time for a reason. It is as close to perfect as one can get with these things. Once you have spent a little bit of time familiarizing yourself with it you will be quite content with what it can do for you.and that is a lot. It seems to be the most commonly used program with the most happy users of any of the other software.available.
I have been using it for over twenty years and greatly regret that Ancestry no longer provides it. It does everything that I will ever need for me and my family and our future ability to share and inform. What has happened is that the CD-DVD format has become obsolete and our newer computers no longer have a CD-DVD drive.yikes, gone the way of the floppy disk. How can we still keep the information and this method of maintaining it up to date? Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Susan Lubow, Oct 5, 2018 Rating I have been using FTM 16 since it came out. Basically, I use it to organize and store information and photos and create books.
I do my research without connecting FTM 16 to the internet and I have no problems. The biggest plus is the ability to make and then print books on my own computer. Or, make the books and then have them printed at stores such as Staples. The way in which this program allows one to insert pictures into text is simple and unsurpassed in subsequent versions. The biggest drawback to continued use is that you have to have a 32-bit computer. If your computer is 64-bit, certain functions (exporting reports, trying to create/preview books) are non-executable and will cause the program to shut down. I am considering buying FTM 2017.
I hope that it has the ability to allow me to produce books, as i have been doing fort years. Biggest Pro: Book making feature Biggest Con: Full capacity only on 32-bit computers.
Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Carol Librarian, Sep 2, 2018 Rating Versions and dates and other ways of identifying Family Tree Maker software is confusing! I wish developers (and Family Tree Maker in particular) had a consistent way of dating and giving version numbers to their editions. Magazines have issue/volume numbers and dates and so do serial books. Why can’t software? I’ve been using Family Tree Maker when it first came out. It was easy to use up to version 16. I wanted/needed the latest FTM version for Windows 10.
When I went from FTM ver.16 to installing FTM ver. 22 (2014) —- I lost, or version 22 did not import, all of my NOTES! Version 22 was a big visual/logical clutter. Many times I think software is updated with big changes to justify charging more money and to market the upgrade with useless but luring talking points. I spent many years collecting information and want software I can trust. The trend is for everything to go online, but I want my information safe, private and on my computer. I want reliable software on my computer and not in the clouds.
I was upset and very frustrated with FTM Ver. 22 (2014) and decided give FTM ver.16 a try on Windows 10.
BIG SURPRISE — I Just discovered my Windows 10 with latest updates (as of 9-2-2018) will run FTM Ver. I now have my NOTES back. I used the same file for both software versions but FTM ver. 22 did not import my Notes.
Biggest Pro: FTM Ver. 16 works on Windows 10 (updated to 9-2-2018) Biggest Con: Will ver. 16 continue to work on later Windows 10 updates? Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Marty Malinowski, Jun 11, 2018 Rating I liked the earlier versions, have both 2005 and 2010 but pre-version 16 reads more like a spreadsheet and is easier to navigate. I think 2010 is version 19. Sometimes I wonder if the people who write code ever use the product for its intended purpose.
Ancestry online is good because you are not limited to a single computer and I don’t know if the new FTM with synch is really needed. BTW if anyone wants to create a pfd and is having issues, try using bullzip pdf printer, you can print anything to it just like to your printer. Biggest Pro: Easy to navigate Biggest Con: None really. Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Bill, Jan 8, 2018 Rating Still trying to use FTM 2006, formerly V 16, on Win 10 and now cannot save/export a PDF file to my desktop. The program crashes. Says something about Family tree maker Executable I have tried every compatibility setting imaginable. Even downloaded a completely different PDF printer.
I can save/export as RTF and as TXT files without a problem. I do have FTM 2010 and it won’t load either. I haven’t updated over the years because the new programs are too unfriendly.
V 16 has been a great program even with Win10 until this problem started. Biggest Pro: Great Program Biggest Con: when PDF works. Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Sandra Trapp, Jan 3, 2018 Rating I have version 16 and also 2017 and it works well on my Windows 10 computer. I like version 16 the best because the screens are not “cluttered.” with all kinds of information. I use FTM mainly as storage of information.
I do not connect to the internet with it. I easily can create various reports, pedigree charts, family group sheets, etc. And the icons on the screen make it easy to know how to do this. I definitely had a learning curve with 2017. Biggest Pro: Simplicity of the screens versus 2017. Biggest Con: I have no cons - it works for what I need. Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Toni Marmino, Sep 23, 2017 Rating Not Rated I have version 16 and I did not upgrade the first time because I would have had to reenter all of my info.
I have well over 200,000 names and I am not about to reenter everything. I have been working on mine for over 15 years I think. I would really like to keep what I have done. Biggest Pro: Can add as many children and wives as one needs. Biggest Con: Always having to change the Maiden Name on each female. Why can’t we set once and not have to worry about it?
Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by christopher, Feb 14, 2017 Rating I use FTM ver. 10 (released june 28, 2002) on my intel Core i7-4790 CPU Dell running Windows 10.0.14393. I have to run it in an XP shell. I have over 2100 individuals in my tree, 26333 text records.
Most everything works great and all the features are available, except the “scrapbook” (which does have entries from running this version of FTM on my previous computer - an XP based system). If i click the scrapbook icon for any individual the program crashes - so i’ve stopped using that feature. Biggest Pro: easy to add people and link people (merge them if you accidently create two records for the same person) Biggest Con: the file gets really large when adding lots of pictures and scrapbook items.
Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Douglas E Walker, Sep 23, 2016 Rating Overall the FTM had very good Family Trees but was let down with the Book Making pagination prior to printing. The only problems I had with the Trees was when when taken over by Ancestry, when finally it failed to work altogether on their site. In other words Ancestry ruined a good product. Biggest Pro: The Trees are very good Biggest Con: The Book making set-up has problems with pagination particularly when pictures are included. Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Donald, Sep 13, 2016 Rating Alright program if you want to be tied to Ancestry.com. The second I finished my tree as much as I could on Ancestry, transferred to other programs I deleted FTM.
There are just better programs to use than this one which don’t have the bugs. Right now my favorite programs are as follows: RootsTrust, Gramps, and Heredis. I also deleted Legacy 8 and am considering deleting RootsMagic as well just cause these genealogy programs are definitely not user friendly and make it harder than it should be to Cite things. Biggest Pro: The ability to download your tree directly from Ancestry. Biggest Con: Outdated and buggy.
Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Paula W., Aug 27, 2016 Rating I was advised by an ancestry.com representative to purchase Family Tree Maker to help me transfer information from other user’s family trees to my own. I purchased the download link for 3 computers and installed the software on only one computer. I was able to log into the program once, but soon discovered I was unable to access the family tree that I was a guest in viewing. I logged out, and have since been unable to log back in.
I use the same e-mail/username and password used to access ancestry.com, but I keep receiving a “Log In Failed” error message. The absolute worst part of it all is that there is no live technical support: No 1-800 number, and the live chat doesn’t work. I submitted an e-mail to tech support but received a reply stating it’ll be 1-2 business days before they can get back to me. Being it was sent on Friday, I figure I won’t hear back until Monday at the earliest, which is the cut off date to view the tree I’ve been invited to view. I’m uncertain if these issues exist because there has been no software updates for the past 2 years but I’m out nearly $90 for a program I cannot use as I was told I could. Biggest Pro: None.
Biggest Con: No technical support. Cannot log into ancestry through the software.
Outdated software.
Have always used FTM 2006 and although have the 2012 upgrade prefer older version. Unfortunately I lent the original 2006 disc to someone and am unlikely to get it back. Have just upgraded computer and now running Windows 8.1.
I have transferred all my files but find I can't open my FTW files now. Can't use upgrade without original disk either.
If I purchase another 2006 version if there are any still available would it be compatible with Windows 8.1 or do I need to purchase a full FTM 2013 or 14 version which I think both run with Windows 8.1 (but which I will probably not like) or is there a work around out there? Grateful for any suggestions, Thanks, Pheno.
